Type in Context

I chose to base this brief around typography that I found interesting during my visit to Barcelona this summer. The reason why I chose to focus on typography in Barcelona was because it has a particular different aesthetic compared to what I am used to seeing in my daily life, this made it a lot more interesting. The images were taken over the course of 5 days. Throughout the collection of 40 photographs, the aesthetic varies from contemporary, dated, abstract and illustrative.

A lot of the images are based around branding, for example; resturants, independent businesses, local shops, large and small companies, museums and transport. Since all of the photographs are linked to brands, the typography in most of the images is very contemporary and sleek. However ,some of the images follow a more abstract and expressive approach in order to fit the aesthetic that the brands and companies are aiming for.

For example, the three images below follow the more contemporary, sleek and legible approach to Barcelona typography. All three images focus on branding for particular companies, the first two photographs were taken in restaurants/cafes, whereas the third image shows typography which was designed for a dental clinic. The typography used for the restaurants is extremely minimal, giving the brands a welcoming and simplistic aesthetic. However, the typography used in the dental clinic is also very minimal but in a more obscure and symmetrical way. This links to the more obscure and illustrative typography which I found interesting during my visit.

Additionally, the three images below show the more illustrative side to typography around Barcelona which I found interesting during my trip. The photographs are based on branding for smaller or independent companies, which is a reason why they follow a more illustrative approach. The illustrative approach gives the brand a more personal look whereas the first 3 images above focus on branding for bigger companies, which is why the typography is more current.

The second image below shows a selection of 3 different typographic examples, giving a more expressive look. Additionally, the typography used for the word ‘Peccato’ is very similar to the typography used in the first photograph below, following an almost handwritten illustrative aesthetic. Furthermore, the third photograph also looks quite handwritten, whilst at the same time looking symmetrical in the same way that the dental clinic photograph does- creating a link between the contemporary and illustrative photographs.

Also, a lot of the photographs which I took during my trip were based around transport. Since Barcelona is an extremely popular tourist destination, transportation information and directions were easily accessible from most parts of the city. The typography for this information is needed to be extremely legible and simple- linking back to the contemporary typography which interested me.

In conclusion, typography in Barcelona was found to be very diverse, making it a lot more interesting and fun to search for.
