'Social Minds' Podcast

Today I listened to a podcast by 'Social Minds' in order to gather more research relating to my chosen issue, I found listening to a podcast was quite enjoyable and more useful than reading more articles, as I got to listen to actual conversations and a range of different opinions on certain topics.

'Social Minds' is the UK's first dedicated social media marketing podcast. The topics that they talk about are usually related to the future for social media, or the new things that have come out...this is important for me to research as the development of social media will probably have even bigger negative effects on us.

The talks are by Theo and Eve, each week they bring out a new podcast which they’re joined by a host of progressive minds to talk about and learn the unique and innovative ways in which social media is being used across the world.

In this podcast, they discussed a topic relating to the future of messaging apps (in the next couple of years):

  • The public think that the 3 apps are going to become one app (insta, messenger and WhatsApp) but this isn’t the case, they are staying as they are but instead it changes who you can reach on your network...you will now be able to reach anyone within that ecosystem.

...for example the woman talking mentions that she has all three but her mum only has Whatsapp, so...if she was using messenger, the theory is that her mum would receive the message through Whatsapp.

  • However, this is happening in 2020... it still needs a lot of developing so for example if her mum were to reply then what app would it come through for her? Whatsapp or messenger (what she originally used).

Issues:

  • Whatsapp is the only app that is encrypted so people are worried that all of the other apps might become unencrypted if this were to happen, but this is what the makers (Mark Zuckerberg) are aiming to do. When something is encrypted it makes it a lot more secure.

  • Additionally the co founders of whatsapp and Instagram left the company as they felt that they weren’t in control anymore of what the future holds for these apps...

  • Co founders and original/older employees are unhappy about these app merged, as it means that the individual app loses its uniqueness
