Study Task: Book Analysing

Today we got set a mini task with partners to analyse books that we have bought into the session. This task was helpful as it got us thinking about layout, stock and materials in depth when considering what to do for our own publications.

I worked with my peers Will and Jake. They both bought in chunky story books where as the one I bought in was a recipe book for cocktails.

  • The 2 story books used the same paper stock- thinner paper. Whereas the cocktail book used thicker satin stock, giving a classier, richer look- reflecting the theme of cocktails (a posher alcoholic drink compared to beer or cider for example)
  • Cocktail book is more durable as the reader would most likely be around liquids which means potential spills
  • All 3 books were bound using glue- maybe because its a cheap option, making it easy to make loads of copies.
  • Recipe book is a square shape (16cm by 16cm) to give a cutesy sort of impression, also makes it easier to hold and take to places maybe? whereas the story books are typical rectangle size (13cm by 20cm)
  • The recipe book could be made more effective as it doesn't lay flat- maybe it could be a set of a few as there are different categories within it or it could even be a set of cooking cards
  • Recipe book has an embossed and glossy cover
  • Story books have a flat matte cover
