UX/UI Group Activity

In groups, we were set the task to discuss the UX and UI of a few different apps in order to gain a bit more understanding on what makes a good or bad UX and UI. In our group, we decided to each choose an app from our phone that we would discuss.

We documented this through a mind map:

The app that I chose from my phone was 'Flo':

The app 'Flo' is basically a period calendar which you input your menstrual cycle, the app then calculates when your next period will be and when you are most likely to fall pregnant. The app is useful as a lot of women have irregular periods, so the app recalculates the cycle every time there is a change, e.g. a longer cycle or a shorter cycle.

Mind map notes for Flo:

  • The + button is not useful but it is placed in an appropriate spot
  • Colour coded
  • It is convenient- automatic recalculation
  • Soft aesthetic- appropriate as it is calming and feminine
  • No one cares about the 'insights' section

Jakes chosen app was 'My Fitness Pal' .MyFitnessPal is a smartphone app and website that tracks diet and exercise to determine your calorie intakes and nutrients for the users' goals and uses gamification elements to motivate users.

Mind map notes for MyFitnessPal:

  • Thousands of products
  • UI is clean/sharp and minimal, appropriate
  • Barcode scanning; good UX
  • Unnecessary stories
  • Widgetable- easy access
  • Diary= good, should be shown on homepage though
  • Menu on the bottom right corner is good UX

Will chose the app 'Sign BSL' to discuss. Sign BSL is an app that is designed to teach the user how to do sign language 'Search and compare thousands of words and phrases in British Sign Language (BSL). The largest collection of free video signs online.'

Mind map notes for Sign BSL:
  • Good UX, bad UI
  • Outdated, the videos are from years ago, needs an update!
  • Aesthetic is boring and ugly
  • Easy to navigate, good user experience; no faffing
